We were pleased to see the completion of the front of the Green Shop which did not hinder our opening hours apart from a number of days for the laying of a floor. The work was completed on time.
To enable us to undertake this work we received a grant from West Kent Rural Grants. Like all grant applications they have many applicants for the funding.
We had many good reasons for extending the shop. One was our role in the recycling process. Practically everything that comes into our shop is recycled whether for sale or if an item is not up to standard then its sent to various companies. The items that can be sent off to be recycled go from books to shoes to bra’s and handbags nearly everything can be recycled.
Unfortunately like everything we have been affected by lower returns on all these items.
The Trustees are aware that our costs are rising and that was another good reason to increase the size of the shop for the future as much as now.
Hawkhurst Community Hospital League of Friends was started back in 1967 then it was a cottage hospital and very different to today, and even more so since it first started in 1877 by Mrs Margaret Adams.
What is the same, is the reason why Mrs Adams insisted that the hospital is built where it is and that’s the need for fresh air to help with recovery.
We now do not undertake any large scale project as the NHS have taken over the running since it is no longer under the local doctors.
We concentrate on the patients and making their stay as best we can and have recently invested in items that the hospital needed.
